How do you know if an elderly parent needs more help at home? Changes in eating, medication, personal care, toileting or confusion can sometimes be signs that an older person's needs are changing, even when there hasn't been an obvious crisis.
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Nicola from Unique Senior Care explains how families and caregivers can recognise gradual changes in an elderly parent or loved one, why those changes are worth sharing, and how responding early can help someone receive the right support.
Families often know their loved one best, but can also unintentionally compensate for difficulties. Regular caregivers can provide another perspective because they become familiar with someone's normal habits and routines.
Who this is for:
✓ Families wondering whether an elderly parent needs more help at home✓ Anyone noticing changes in Mum or Dad's behaviour or routine✓ Family carers supporting someone living with dementia✓ Families whose loved one already receives home care✓ Anyone concerned an older person's needs may be changing
In this episode we cover:
✓ Signs an elderly parent may need more help✓ Eating less or hiding food✓ Forgetting or missing medication✓ Changes in washing and personal care✓ Changes in toileting and possible signs of a UTI✓ Sudden or increased confusion✓ Recognising changes when someone has dementia✓ What to do when an elderly parent's needs change✓ Introducing additional home care gradually✓ Why extra care can sometimes be temporary✓ How families, caregivers and care teams can work together
Noticing a change doesn't necessarily mean Mum or Dad suddenly needs a large amount of care or has to leave their home. Sometimes additional support with meals, medication or personal care may be enough. If someone is temporarily unwell, extra care can also be reviewed and reduced again as they recover.

What can a live-in carer actually do, and can live-in care support someone with more complex health needs at home?
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Jo Cleary speaks to Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-In Care at Unique Senior Care, about some of the most common misconceptions families have about live-in care. Families may assume that conditions such as Parkinson's or cancer mean someone's needs are too complex for live-in care because a live-in carer isn't a nurse.
Sophie explains how live-in carers can work alongside district nurses, consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals to help someone continue living at home. The conversation also explores what a live-in carer can help with day to day, how some healthcare tasks may be delegated following additional training and competency assessment, how live-in carers are matched to clients, and whether having live-in care really means receiving care 24 hours a day.
Who this episode is for
✓ Families considering live-in care for a parent or loved one
✓ Anyone wondering what a live-in carer can and cannot do
✓ Families exploring live-in care for someone with complex health needs
✓ People supporting someone living with Parkinson's, cancer or reduced mobility
✓ Families wondering how live-in carers work alongside nurses and healthcare professionals
✓ Anyone wanting to understand how live-in carers are matched with clients
✓ Families comparing live-in care with other care options In this episode we cover
✓ What a live-in carer can actually help with at home
✓ Whether live-in care can support someone with complex health conditions
✓ The difference between live-in care and nursing care
✓ How live-in carers work alongside nurses and healthcare professionals
✓ Personal care, meal preparation, household tasks and community activities
✓ Physiotherapy exercises and supporting someone's mobility at home
✓ What delegated healthcare tasks are and how they work
✓ Support with insulin, stomas and catheters following appropriate training
✓ How live-in carers are matched to a client's needs and personality
✓ Whether families can choose their live-in carer
✓ What happens if a client and live-in carer don't get along
✓ How many hours a live-in carer works each day
✓ Whether live-in care provides 24-hour care
Sophie explains that nursing and live-in care fulfil different roles. While nurses provide clinical support, a live-in carer may help with personal care, washing and dressing, preparing meals, laundry, shopping, maintaining the home and helping someone continue doing the things they enjoy in their community. About Unique Senior Care Unique Senior Care provides personalised home care and live-in care designed around each individual's needs, routines and choices.

How can live-in care help someone regain their independence, confidence and daily routine?
In this episode of The Care Podcast, we explore how person-centred live-in care can help someone rebuild their life at home after a period of ill health, residential care or changes to their mental health.
Sometimes a person's current routine isn't necessarily the routine they would choose. Changes in mobility, confidence or circumstances can mean someone gradually stops doing the things that used to be part of everyday life.
Live-in care can provide the support and encouragement needed to rediscover those routines, set meaningful goals and gradually regain independence.
We also share a real example of someone who returned home after receiving mental health support. With encouragement from live-in care, she gradually returned to painting, horse riding and walking on the beach. After around 18 months, she no longer needed live-in care because she had rebuilt her life and independence.
Who this is for
✓ Families considering live-in care for a loved one✓ Families supporting someone returning home after residential care✓ Anyone worried about a loved one losing confidence or independence✓ People wanting to understand person-centred live-in care✓ Families exploring care and support for someone experiencing mental health difficulties
In this episode we cover
✓ How live-in care can help someone rebuild their daily routine✓ Returning home after living in residential care✓ Understanding what someone's natural routine actually looks like✓ Setting small, meaningful goals to rebuild independence✓ Helping someone return to activities they previously enjoyed✓ How live-in care can provide encouragement and emotional support✓ A real example of rebuilding independence through live-in care✓ Why live-in care doesn't necessarily have to be permanent
Good care isn't simply about completing tasks for someone. It's about understanding the life they want to live and finding safe, realistic ways of helping them enjoy more of it.
Even something as simple as visiting the local newsagent, buying a newspaper and spending time in the park can represent an important step towards regaining independence when someone hasn't been able to do it for months. The episode explains how goals like this can be broken down and reintroduced gradually.

What does a live-in carer actually do all day? Are they with you 24 hours a day, and do you have to change your routine once someone moves into your home?
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains what day-to-day life with a live-in carer can really look like.
Rather than taking over someone's routine, live-in care should work around the way they already choose to live. That might mean helping someone get washed and dressed before leaving them to enjoy breakfast and the newspaper alone, making a morning cup of tea for someone at risk of falling, supporting appointments and activities, or simply being nearby when help is needed.
Sophie also explains how live-in care can adapt when someone's needs become more complex, including dementia support, personal care, continence care, mobility and rehabilitation, overnight support and even multiple carers providing round-the-clock care at home.

When can someone with a Lasting Power of Attorney make care decisions for a parent or loved one? And if someone is receiving care at home, how much information can their family legally and appropriately be told?
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ledbrooke, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains how consent, mental capacity and Lasting Power of Attorney can affect decisions about someone's care. One important misconception is that having Power of Attorney automatically gives a family member control over someone's decisions. Sophie explains why a person who has capacity can continue making their own choices, even when their family or care provider considers those choices unwise.
The conversation also explores how mental capacity can depend on the specific decision being made, what happens when someone cannot make a particular decision themselves, and how best-interest and least-restrictive decisions can help protect someone's safety without unnecessarily taking away their independence.
Who this episode is for ✓ Families with a parent or loved one receiving care at home ✓ Anyone with Lasting Power of Attorney for a parent or relative ✓ Families wondering when Power of Attorney can be used ✓ People trying to understand mental capacity and care decisions ✓ Families supporting someone living with dementia ✓ Anyone concerned about privacy, consent and sharing care information
In this episode we cover ✓ When care providers can share information with family members ✓ Why a client's consent comes before a family's request for information ✓ When Lasting Power of Attorney becomes relevant to care decisions ✓ Whether Power of Attorney lets you make decisions for someone who still has capacity ✓ Why making an "unwise" decision does not automatically mean someone lacks capacity ✓ How mental capacity can differ depending on the decision being made ✓ How decisions are made when someone cannot decide for themselves ✓ What a best-interest decision means in care ✓ How the least-restrictive approach can protect safety and independence ✓ How care reviews can keep families appropriately involved

What is live-in care really like, and does having a carer living with you mean giving up your privacy or independence? For many people considering live-in care, one of the biggest concerns is what it will feel like to have someone else living in their home.
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ludbrook, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains how live-in care works and how the right support can fit around someone's existing home, relationships and routines rather than taking them over.
From deciding how carers rotate to establishing boundaries around family visits, household tasks, pets and time alone, Sophie explains why personalised care planning is so important. A live-in carer doesn't need to be someone's shadow. They can provide companionship and support when it's wanted while still allowing someone the space and independence that matters to them.
Who this episode is for
✓ Families considering live-in care for a parent or loved one✓ Older people worried about losing their privacy or independence✓ Couples wondering how a live-in carer would affect life at home✓ Families comparing live-in care with residential care✓ Anyone wanting to understand how live-in care actually works
In this episode we cover
✓ What live-in care is and how it works✓ When live-in care may be considered instead of visiting care✓ Whether live-in carers stay permanently or rotate✓ How boundaries are established when a carer moves in✓ Maintaining privacy when family and friends visit✓ How couples can retain control of their own household✓ Continuing routines such as walking the dog independently✓ Whether a live-in carer will be with you all the time✓ How carers balance companionship with giving someone space✓ How personalised care plans protect someone's preferences and independence

How do you know when an elderly parent needs care? Often, the first signs are small: an untidy home, washing up beginning to pile up, changes in personal hygiene, reduced mobility or simply noticing that someone isn't managing everyday life quite as they used to.
In this episode of The Care Podcast, Sophie Ledbrook, Head of Live-in Care at Unique Senior Care, explains the signs that an ageing parent or loved one may need more support at home — and why it's better to start the conversation before things reach crisis point. Sophie discusses how families can recognise changes in someone's normal routines, approach conversations about care without taking away their dignity or independence, and introduce support gradually so that it feels less like someone is taking over.

In this episode we cover: ✓ Early signs an elderly parent may need help at home ✓ Changes around the home that families often overlook ✓ Changes in personal hygiene and everyday routines ✓ Falls, reduced mobility and declining health ✓ When living independently may no longer be safe ✓ Why families often wait until a crisis before arranging care ✓ How to talk to a parent who doesn't want care ✓ Introducing help without taking away someone's independence ✓ Why trust and consistency can make accepting care easier ✓ When home care may become essential ✓ Why talking about future care early can make decisions easier
